What is spyware?
Spyware is software that hides in the background of your computer system and reports information about what you are doing with your system to various companies. These companies use the information to target advertisement at you and your system.

Most spyware is installed along with some other program that you install on your system. When you agree to the license agreement, you may be agreeing to allow spyware to be installed along with the "host" program. Even after you uninstall the "host software, the spyware stays on your system. Some examples of spyware or spyware carrying programs are: Gator, Comet Cursor, SaveNow, Precision Time, Microsoft Windows Updates (Yes Really!), Date Manager, and GMT.

Spyware affects your system in many ways. Most spyware is poorly written and therefore prone to cause glitches in your system. All spyware uses up some system resources, and therefore slows down your system. Using up memory can cause glitches in other software that you run as well.

Spyware is known to be responsible for modem failure, internet slowdowns, system lockups, slow bootups, and general malaise.

Spyware is something that has to be contended with on a regular basis. You can clear it off, but it will come back in various forms. There are many tools available to remove spyware, including Adaware and Spybot. Both of these are free downloads and should be used on a regular basis. Of course, updates to both programs will come along from time to time as new spyware threats come out.
